About the Parish ...
The oldest English-speaking Catholic parish in Belgium
was established by Cardinal Leon Joseph Suenens ,
Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels who
requested of The American College Seminary of Louvain
(Leuven) Rector Msgr. Paul Riedl, to take over the pastoral
responsibilities for the English speaking in the Brussels
area on the Fourth of December 1965.
Official status was given to the parish on 4 December 1965
when Fr. Albion Bulger, Vice-Rector of the College, was
appointed as the first pastor. Subsequently, in order to
accord the parish a legal existence, Our Lady of Mercy
ASBL was formally founded by the publication of its
constitution on 9 May, 1968. Members of this legal
organisation are the trustees of the parish.
After 154 years this, the oldest Seminary in Europe, was
closed June 2011 by Bishops in the USA. A great shock
and loss to all and especially to us as Our Lady of Mercy
was a Training Ground for Seminarians coming over to
study in Belgium.
