Commissions

The parish operates through a number of commissions that organize the daily life of the parish.
There are commissions for:
* Liturgical / Spiritual Life
* Community Life / Social Development
* Education
* Communications and IT
* Administration and Finance

All parishioners are encouraged to support the activities of at least one commission.

Spiritual / Liturgical Life Commission:

This commission is a co-ordinating body for all the activities involving the spiritual life of the parish. It organizes such aspects as the Lenten mission, Bible studies, the training of Eucharistic ministers, lectors and ushers.

Community Life / Social Development Commission:

This commission provides opportunities to develop a greater sense of community and bonding among families within the parish. In particular, this is accomplished by:

* Facilitating integration of new parish members by personal contact and follow-up
* Planning and carrying out social activities for all families to help build lasting friendships between Christians who share similar values.

Education Commission:

This commission has the primary responsibility:
* To oversee the work of the various parish education groups (young people and adult education, youth, sacramental preparation, etc)
* To initiate new educational activities as needs arise.

Communications and IT Commission:

This commission's responsibility is to promote awareness of the availability of the religious activities of the parish to visitors and newcomers to Brussels. It prepares brochures and distributes them to hotels, companies, embassies, schools and other places where English-speakers may gather.

Administration & Finance Commission:

The primary responsibilities of the Administration and Finance Commission are to ensure that the parish remains financially sound, to see that the day-to-day operations of the parish are carried out in a responsible manner, and to co-ordinate key administrative functions necessary for the continuing operation of the parish.

Parish Council

One of the main purposes of the Parish Council is to serve as the focal point and co-ordinating body for all activities of the parish. The Council is also required to serve as a medium whereby any and all members of the parish may make known their views.

The Council membership comprises:
* The pastor
* One representative of each commission
* One representative of the trustees
* Several "at large" members selected by random draw from those willing to perform the job

Meetings of the Council are open to all parishioners. The main functions to be achieved at meetings of the Parish Council are communication, co-ordination and decision making. Decisions made by the Council represent the formal, considered advice that is given to the pastor and to the trustees by the parish community as a whole.

Trustees

The trustees are the members of a legally-recognised non-profit organisation known as an Association Sans But Lucratif, but more commonly called an ASBL.

Under Belgian law the ASBL is the legal persona of the parish, and has both rights and responsibilities. The trustees are legally responsible for such matters as annual submission of all state-required documents and observance of all appropriate laws - in just the same way as the directors of a limited company. They handle all business matters, including conduct of bank accounts and the management of parish debts. In order to provide the long-term stability and continuity needed in a community characterised by the short-term stay of most parishioners, trustees are generally long-term registered parishioners with a personal commitment to the long-term welfare and survival of the parish.

Current administrators of the asbl are:-

Peter Nolan-Président

Charles Dumont - Treasurer

Edward (Éamon) Cerasi

Christopher (Richard) Perry

Maurizio Mancini

Ylva Boija (Mafeld)

Financials

Our Lady of Mercy Parish is financially self-supporting, and survives entirely on Parishioner donations. We have no other source of funding, and we have one loan on the Parish Center.

We encourage parishioners to set up standing bank orders, regardless of the amount. In a transient parish such as ours, this payment method ensures that contributions are made regularly, despite frequent travelling. Standing bank orders help increase revenues, since they help avoid big drop-offs in contributions during the summer, and they also help our financial planning.

Standing orders for bank transfers should be made payable to DEXIA Bank, account 833-4502115-21 in the name of Our Lady of Mercy ASBL. Forms are available on request from the parish office.

US$ checks, made payable to "Our Lady of Mercy", are also welcome. Or, if you would like to make a US$ bank transfer, please ask for details of our US$ account.

Euro transfers made to BNP Paribas Fortis Bank account 210-0469290-56 in the name of The American College are used for the parish and are tax deductible for US citizens.
