From + Jean Kockerols | Évêque auxiliaire pour Bruxelles - Hulpbisschop voor Brussel
From the Dear friends,
You will have read the communiqué issued last night by the bishops of Belgium. Since then, the federal government has announced drastic measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus. I insist that the bishops' statement be interpreted strictly. I appeal to your sense of civic duty.
As regards baptisms and marriages, these can easily be postponed. For funerals, I suggest a brief celebration in a limited circle and that, once the epidemic is over, celebrations without the presence of the body be held to accompany the families in their grieving. I leave it up to your discretion to decide whether other meetings should be kept.
Exceptional circumstances and the change in the rhythm of life that is imposed on us are an invitation to experience Lent with ever greater fervour. We can drawn inspiration from various sources, including social media. Let us be attentive to people who risk being even more isolated than usual, and let us use the means available to us to remain in communion with as many as possible.
You will receive a new communiqué next week.
